Shock and outrage at Delhi cab rape case

A cloud of shock and outrage engulfed Delhi after a private school van driver was arrested for repeatedly raping a 12-year-old girl in his charge. Angry crowd beat up the accused. The police is now looking for the four minor boys who were his partners in crime.

Anger, outrage and then the feeling of helplessness. It was a mix of mob justice and a mother's anguished appeal for help. These were the scenes witnessed at a Delhi court when this man was brought in. Accused of raping this woman's 12-year-year-old daughter and also allegedly sodomizing her two minor sons, the 38-year-old accused was lynched by the residents of a central Delhi neighbourhood.

On Friday, 38-year-old Lalit was arrested by Delhi police after a woman filed a complaint with the Prasad Nagar Police Station in central Delhi, alleging that Lalit, a private van driver, who would drive her children to school, had been raping her daughter and sexually abusing her sons for as long as a year.

Lalit was not the only one who was involved in this heinous crime. His partners in crime were apparently two boys - both minors. The 12-year-old girl was repeatedly threatened with visually sexually explicit images of herself, as a result of which she did not tell her mother till only recently. There are also reports of the driver taking video clips of the children. The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights has now ordered an inquiry into the case.

For parents who depend on private taxis to take their children to school, this incident has raised disturbing questions about their security and safety.
