In +Ubuntu , its very easy to write bengali. One should enable bengali keyboard layout option from the settings. The attached video is showing just how to do that.
After enabling the bengali keyboard layout (my personal favourite is provat as its very easy to remember), the keyboard layout could be changed simply form the keyboard icon present in the global menu bar. Following the layout chart, could easily write bengali. It should be true for all indian languages but never tried them myself.
